Preparing Churches to Protect Children and Youth Workshop (4 hour)

When we read headlines about child abuse or neglect, we may feel powerless to help. But research shows that faith communities that actively work to address this problem exert a highly protective influence upon children in their congregations and in their communities.

This workshop will serve to train church leaders and members in safe practices as well as provide a good overview of the faith community’s role in child safety. This presentation also includes information about developing and/or implementing a child and youth protection policy, providing step-by-step information about how to mobilize, educate, train, and empower your faith community to draft a policy that works for your church and includes sample policies and a checklist to guide your policy-making process.

The training topics address:

  • What can we do to keep children and youth safe in our homes, churches, and communities
  • What is child abuse and neglect?
  • What is the faith community’s role in keeping children and youth safe?
  • What resources are available?
